Golf Course Improvement Project: Designing for the Future

Plantation Country Club continues to be committed to golf as a major amenity for our Members. We are in the process of redesigning the course to maintain 18-holes of golf in response to ACHD’s widening of State Street and the updated Pierce Park Lane intersection which will claim or encroach on two holes along State Street.

Working with award-winning golf course architect Brian Curley of Schmidt-Curley Golf Design, we presented an initial golf course design concept to Members in June. The overall reception of the design was positive, and we had numerous conversations to understand how we could improve it further to enhance the Club experience.

Last week, we shared a second iteration of the golf course improvement project which maintains the core principles of the original design and incorporates changes reflecting the feedback and recommendations we heard from Members.

Some of the highlights of the new golf course design and property layout include:

  • A course redesign focused on raising the level of play for serious golfers and raising the experience to be more family-friendly. We want a course that is attractive to existing players and works for all of our Members no matter their handicap.
  • Options to play three, six or nine holes near the clubhouse, and a full 18 holes with returning nines.
  • Existing holes 12-16 (renumbered 3-7) will undergo minor renovations of tees and greens to maintain course consistency but remain relatively unchanged.
  • Addition of seven lakes and water features throughout the course to enhance the natural setting and free up fill material that will be used to raise some of the holes to mitigate groundwater flooding issues.
  • Expansion of the existing practice putting green, and addition of a new short game and warm up area to improve the first tee experience.
  • New bocce ball courts and an event lawn added near the Clubhouse to provide additional social experiences for members.
  • Expansion of the pool area to add new amenities.

We plan to start the course improvements to match ACHD’s construction timeline along State Street to consolidate efforts and minimize the disruption to Members and activity around the Clubhouse. ACHD is currently set to begin construction in January 2021 but utility relocation could start as early as Fall 2020.

The full course will remain open through the 2020 golf season. We anticipate a year of construction and grow-in to complete the course all at once and we will lose the 2021 season. The clubhouse and other amenities will remain open through construction and the new course will open for the 2022 season.
